"radio played soft sarangi music"

The sarangi is a short-necked string instrument from the Indian subcontinent, carved from a single block of wood.

Its name is derived from the Hindu words: sau (meaning "hundred") and rang (meaning "colour"), as the range of sounds produced is said to be as expressive as a hundred colours.

The sarangi is said to be the hardest Indian instrument to master, and a properly tuned instrument will hum and buzz, with echo-like resonances.
