In 1975 and 1976 the Indian Government initiated a massive family planning scheme aimed at reducing the population, especially in poorer areas.

In 1976, 8 million sterilisations were performed, including a staggering 1.7 million in September alone. Many people had the operation performed against their will and hundreds died from infections caused by poor hygiene levels during the procedure.
