Lincoln Steffens, one of Hemingway's 'pressmates', was among the journalists to form The American Magazine in 1906. He attempted to help Hemingway sell a number of his stories, and even aided Bill Bird and Guy Hickok in the search for the lost valise of manuscripts after that fateful episode at the Gare de Lyon.
