Lycidas is a pastoral elegy written by the English poet John Milton (1608-1674) in memory of his friend Edward King who died by drowning in 1637.

'For Lycidas is dead, dead ere his prime,

Young Lycidas and hath not left his peer.

Who would not sing for Lycidas? He knew

Himself to sing and build the lofty rhyme'
