The Lusitania (RMS Lusitania) was an ocean liner which was torpedoed by a German U-boat on 7 May 1915 off the Old Head of Kinsale, Ireland, killing 1,199 of the 1,959 people on board. The sinking of the Lusitania turned public opinion in many countries against Germany, and was pivotal in the United States' decision to weigh in on the Allied side  in the later stages of World War I.
