Bilquis' assumed name is taken from the H. Rider Haggard novel She. In the novel, Ayesha is a powerful, immortal sorceress.

 Thor is the Norse god of thunder, storms, oak trees, fertility and protection of humans.

The day of the week Thursday derives from his name. He is the son of Odin. so this part in the novel is especially poignant as Wednesday is recounting the tale of Thor's suicide.

Page 418. " The Wizard of Oz on video. "

The Wizard of Oz is a famous musical fantasy film, made in 1939 and starring Judy Garland. It was based on a novel by L. Frank Baum called The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

The Thylacine is considered to be extinct, although occasional sightings have been reported in Tasmania. It was the largest known carnivorous marsupial of modern times.

Edith Sitwell (September 1887-December 1964) was a British poet who endorsed innovative trends in English poetry. She was friends with Dylan Thomas and helped publish the posthumous work of Wilred Owen.

 

Don Marquis (July 1878-December 1937) was an American humorist, journalist, novelist and poet. He was best known for creating the characters Archy and Mehitabel.
