"John O'London's Weekly" was a very popular literary magazine published between 1919 and 1954.  Regular contributors included Winston Churchill and Somerset Maugham.

Page 409. " 'Tis all about birth control and that's banned in Ireland. "

Contraceptives were legalised in Northern Ireland in the 1960s but remained prohibited in the South until 1973.  In that year, it became legal to import them for personal use, but it was not until 1980 that they were fully legalised.  The Catholic Church officially opposes birth control.
