"artists like Jackson Pollock, Franz Kline, Willem de Kooning and Robert Motherwell"

Paul Jackson Pollock (1912–1956,or just Jackson Pollock, was an incredibly famous and yet reclusive American painter who produced a wealth of abstract expressionist work. He was a known alcoholic and indeed died from his drinking addiction at just 44.

The Abstract Expressionist Movement, or 'Action Painting', which really took off in New York during the 1940s and 1950s, birthed a range of artistic talent, including Franz Jozef Kline (1910-1962), whose best paintings appeared in black and white.

Dutch American Willem de Kooning (1904-1997) was another abstract expressionist artist, as was the American Robert Motherwell (1915-1991).
