Saint Rose of Lima (1586-1617) was the first American Catholic saint. She was born and brought up in Lima, Peru, where she lived a life of abstinence devoted to helping the sick and the poor. Her canonization (elevation as a saint) by Pope Clement X took place in 1671. Today, in Peru and some other Latin American countries, her life and work are celebrated by a public holiday on August 30th.
