La Wally (1892) is an opera by Alfredo Catalani (1854-1893). Wally is the Austrian heroine (short for Wallburga). Like The Ring, La Wally has a particularly unstageable conclusion: Wally throws herself fatally into the path of an avalanche.
The opera has one famously beautiful aria, "Ebben?... Ne andrò lontana", which Wally sings as she leaves home forever. Catalani composed the aria originally as "Chanson Groënlandaise", and only later incorporated it into the opera.
The aria was brilliantly used as the centrepiece of the 1981 French film Diva.
