The Agony in the Garden refers to the night spent by Jesus in the Garden of Gesthemane before his trial and crucifixion. Agony (from the Greek agonia) denotes Jesus’ anguished state of mind as he struggles to come to terms with the sacrifice he must make for all of humanity.

Jesus’ own humanity comes to the fore as he asks God to ‘let this cup pass me by’, before accepting his sacrifice and willingly surrendering to the Roman soldiers who have come to arrest him.
