Cointreau is a type of Triple-sec, a version of Curaçao (a liqueur made from the dried peel of bitter Caribbean oranges) which is less sweet than the traditional version.

It may be drunk as an apéritif (before a meal, to stimulate the appetite) or as a digestif (after a meal, to aid digestion).
