Fustanellas were worn by Greek fighters in the 1821 revolution.   The Evzones are the Greek presidential guards, who wear traditional costume consisting of a white-sleeved white shirt, an embroidered waistcoat, a sash, pompom-tipped shoes, and a skirt - or fustanella - with 400 pleats, representing the 400 years of Turkish oppression.
