'Clan' is set primarily around Hermitage Castle near the town of Newcastleton in the Scottish Borders. Built originally by the de Soulis family, it once guarded what was known as "the bloodiest valley in Britain" and was the home of the evil William de Soulis who is the main protagonist in the story. It sits close to the once disputed border between Scotland and England on the edge of what was once known as "The debatable lands."
