Also known as Buddha, he was an Indian spiritual teacher who founded Buddhism. His biography is subject to much speculation and even his birth and death dates are uncertain, though he probably lived somewhere between 563 BCE and 483 BCE.  Buddha means 'enlightened one' and among his teachings are the assertions that all things are impermanent, that the perception of self is an illusion and that suffering is an inevitable part of existence.
