"Manners makyth man"

Manners makyth man was the motto of William of Wykeham (1320 – 1404) and also that of New College, Oxford and Winchester College. William of Wykeham was Bishop of Winchester, as well as Chanceller and also founder of New College and Winchester College (hence the same motto).

The motto was rather revolutionary in its time, firstly because it was written in English, not Latin and also because of its social commentary, as in it was the person’s behaviour and not his wealth or social status, that made him.
