Jesus Christ told the story of the Prodigal Son. The parable can be found in the Gospel of Luke, and it is considered to be the final story of the “Lost” Parables, following the Parable of the Lost Sheep and the Parable of the Lost Coin.

The Prodigal Son leaves home to become a wastrel, but when he finally returns home, chastened and penitent, he is welcomed by his father.

An articled clerk began his apprenticeship by signing a contract, known as “articles of clerkship,” which committed the clerk to a fixed period of employment under an employer, who would train the clerk in his profession

Charles Dickens worked as a junior clerk in the law office of Ellis and Blackmore from May 1827 to November 1828.

Ecclesiastes
Public Domain Solomon - "son of David, and king in Jerusalem" by Gustave Doré

This is similar to an often quoted section of Ecclesiastes, a book of the Bible, which reads, “To everything there is a season…”

This book of the Bible is narrated by the son of David and, like David Copperfield, is mainly an autobiographical reflection.
