During 16-18 September 1982, the Israeli ‘Defense’ Forces, who had invaded and gained control of Southern Lebanon and large sections of Beirut, allowed the Christian Lebanese Forces into the Palestinian refugee camps of Sabra and Shatila. An estimated 3,500 people were killed, almost all of them civilians. The PLO had withdrawn to Tunisia earlier that year, and the camps were undefended.
