Pan, a son of Hermes, was the Greek god of wilderness and fertility. He is generally depicted as a satyr or faun, with a goat's horns, hindquarters and ears. Pan’s image was often used to depict the devil, also said to be part goat. Both Pan and the Celtic deity Cernunnos, who had the horns of a stag, were equated and confused with the physical representation of Satan.
