The Them is Adam’s gang, consisting of himself, Brian, Pepper and Wensleydale. The group is modelled on the Just William stories by Richmal Crompton, about a mischievous boy and his friends. Coincidentally or not, William Brown and his friends lived in the village of Hadfield

J.M.W. Turner, Sir Edwin Henry Landseer, Samuel Palmer and George Stubbs were all English painters. Landseer and Stubbs were particularly noted for their portrayals of animals, while Palmer and Turner were known for landscapes.
