Apartheid was a system of racial segregation in South Africa, which sparked international outrage. In 1990, when Good Omens was published, South Africa was just beginning to emerge from this dark era, memorably with the release of Nelson Mandela from prison.

“Apartheid” literally means “separateness” in Afrikaans.
