"fair, almost red hair, done in the Bressant style"
Charles Haas, one of Proust's models for Swann
Jean Baptiste Prosper Bressant (1815–1886) was a famous actor who played in Paris and St Petersburg. He introduced a hairstyle which was short at the front and longer at the back, seemingly an unfortunate forerunner of the modern mullet.
Several of Proust's friends are considered the models for Charles Swann, including Charles Haas and Charles Ephrussi.
