Mephistopheles is the devil character in Goethe's Faust and Marlowe's Doctor Faustus, to whom Faust sells his soul.

The quote is in reference to LaMont Chu, an E.T.A. student obsessed with the trappings of a fame that a career in professional tennis would bring.  This blog entry nominates a scene between Chu and the mythical 'sweat guru' Lyle as their favourite passage in Infinite Jest.
