In 1888 John Robert Gregg invented his own form of shorthand stenography based on elliptical figures and bisecting lines. Along with other forms of shorthand, it has been rendered nearly obsolete by audio recording devices and personal computers.

Robert's Rules of Order contains the standard regulations on how to run a Parliamentary meeting, and was first published in February 1876 by then U.S. Army Major Henry Martyn Robert (1837–1923).
