Originally a royal palace, the Louvre has been a public museum since 1793, and has undergone a number of changes. In Napoleon's time, for example, it was renamed the Musée Napoléon. It is now the most visited museum in the world, and houses 35,000 objects ranging from pre-history to the 19th century, including the famous Mona Lisa.
