Viol Player by Gainsborough
Also known as Viola da Gamba, the viol
was a very popular stringed instrument of the Baroque and Renaissance periods. It comes in various sizes, and the larger instruments are played like a cello, resting on the floor. Unlike the violin family, it is strung with gut to produce a softer tone, and tuned in fourths like a modern guitar.
