" enough to satisfy Lady Bertram, who assured him, as soon as he mentioned the name of Cardinal Wolsey, that he had got the very speech "
Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, a real historical figure, is a character in the play Henry VIII, said to be co-written by William Shakespeare and John Fletcher.
Wolsey was at one time the most powerful advisor and politician at Henry's court. He was also made Archbishop of York. He fell from grace when he failed to obtain an annulment for Henry's first marriage (to Catherine of Aragon).
