Sarmizegethusa Regia was the capital and stronghold of the Dacians, located on a 1200 metre high peak in the Orastie Mountains of modern Romania. The defensive walls were partially dismantled under Trajan at the end of the First Dacian War (102 AD), but the Dacians rebuilt them. They were more systematically dismantled in the course of the Second Dacian War (106 AD) and the inhabitants forcibly moved to a new capital, Ulpa Traiana Sarmizegethusa.
