  Leonid Brezhnev was First Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1964 until his death in 1982.  From his mid-70s he suffered from narcotic dependance and had problems with speaking. He survived a heart attack and a clinical death, and finally died from a second heart attack on 10 November 1982.
