The Dorset culture (approx. 500 BC - 1500 AD) preceded the Inuit culture in Greenland and Arctic North America. According to Inuit legends, the first inhabitants (called Tuniit or Sivullirmiut) were taller and stronger than the Inuit, but they were timid and had to submit to the Inuit.

The earliest research on this culture started in 1925, when some artefacts were found in Cape Dorset, Nunavut in Canada.
