Elijah is a prominent biblical prophet, appearing in the first and second Books of Kings as denouncer of the Israelite monarchy and defender of the Hebrew God against the cult of Ba'al.  This leads him into outspoken conflict with Ahab, king of Israel (see note to page 84), who accuses him of troubling the nation and whose downfall he prophesies.
