Francisco de Goya was a Spanish court painter, appointed by Charles III in 1786. Goya also painted for Charles IV and other Spanish nobility. Near the end of his life, Goya began painting darker, more political pieces.

The Injured Mason is sometimes known as The Drunken Mason due to the smiles on the faces of the bearers.
