When contraception was first introduced in Rhodesia in 1957, there was much suspicion amongst the black population that it was being used to control their numbers. However after independence in 1980 the economy was unable to support the baby boom and family planning was more widely accepted.  By 1990 Zimbabwe had become an internationally recognised leader in family planning among developing nations.
