Michaelhouse has recently been immortalised in a series of popular South African comic novels by John van de Ruit, chronicling the adventures of Spud Milton. Spud is a not all that cool high school student at an exclusive boarding school, which is easily recognisable as Michaelhouse (the school attended by van de Ruit in the late 1980s and early 1990s).  Spud was published in 2005, followed by Spud - The Madness Continues (2007) and Spud - Learning to Fly (2009). The movie Spud was released in 2010, starring John Cleese.
