Puss in Boots is a French fairy tale about a cunning cat who, through trickery, secured for his peasant master a princess's hand in marriage. The tale, written by Charles Perrault, first appeared in 1695 as one of eight fairy tales in the book, Histoires ou contes du temps passé.

The Master Cat, also called the Booted Cat, has appeared in various works, including the third act of Tchaikovsky's ballet, The Sleeping Beauty. He was recently given a voice by Antonio Banderas in the Dreamworks Shrek animation movies.
