Troy Anthony Davis was sentenced to death in August 1991 for the murder of an off-duty police officer, Mark MacPhail in Georgia. MacPhail was shot in an effort to intervene when friends of Davis were abusing a homeless man in a Burger King parking lot. He was shot in the face and chest. Davis’s case was based solely on circumstantial evidence. He was executed on September 21, 2011.

Growing up, he was the child of a Korean War veteran. He wasn’t very good at school, and dropped out his junior year of high school to become more available to his family. He had a job; however, stopped showing up after a while. He had signed up to join the Marines and was a coach for a recreational basketball team shortly before he was convicted.
