The British Museum was founded in 1753, and began with a collection of 71,000 objects bequeathed by Sir Hans Sloane. The museum was opened to the public in 1759, in Montagu House in Bloomsbury, the site on which the museum still stands. Today the museum is free to enter, and sees in the region of 6 million annual visitors, all keen to view the millions of unique items in its collections which include Asia, Africa, Oceania and the Americas, Ancient Egypt and Sudan, Greece and Rome, Middle East, Prehistory and Europe, and Portable Antiquities and Treasure.
