A knot-garden is a formal garden of aromatic plants and herbs. These are grown in intricate patterns, usually symmetrical, enclosed in a square frame. A small garden might have only one square, but those of richer houses would have had many. Knot-gardens would be sweet-smelling, and a pleasant place to take a stroll.
