Loincloths and unstitched ochre colored shawls or robes are commonly worn by ascetics as a symbol of renunciation of material possessions. It is also a form of austerity and self-denial of any form of pleasure or safeguard against the wrath of nature. Earth-color  is a colored mineral, such as seinna, or ochre used as a pigment to dye the clothes worn by Sadhus, or ascetics. Earth-color was the cheapest and most widely available dye for clothes.
