Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was a French Impressionist painter. The Impressionists were not as widely known in 1947 as they are today: the Lapidus family are shown to have fashionable, modern taste in their collection.
Stingo has been denied the opportunity to read Lady Chatterley's Lover as it was banned in America, as well as in many other countries, after its publication in Italy in 1928. Its explicit sexual content was considered scandalous, and it was not published in America until 1959. It was published in England in 1960, where it was the subject of an unsuccessful obscenity trial.
Andre Gide (1869-1951) was a French writer, famous for his autobiographical works as well as his fiction. He became a source of inspiration for 1920s writers such as Albert Camus and Jean Paul Sartre.
