The lily most associated with funerals is the calla lily.  Its popularity began within the Christian tradition, as the whiteness of the flower was said to represent the soul’s return to perfection and purity after death.  The texture of the flower’s surface is so beautifully smooth that it is easy to see why this idea resonated with people.  It can also be said to convey a sense of sedateness that is appropriate to such an event.  Strangely enough – and chillingly appropriate here – the flower is also popular at weddings...
