In French law, a couple must hold the legal part of their wedding at the ‘Mairie’, or town hall.  In Paris, this is the Hotel de Ville, which lies close to the Centre Pompidou and Notre Dame cathedral.  It has existed at this location since 1357, although massive reconstruction was necessary following heavy damage by the Paris Commune in 1871.  It was lavishly restyled according to the Neo-Renaissance tastes of the time; one of the murals was painted by Puvis de Chavannes.  It is the seat of the current Mayor of Paris, and various public events are held there throughout the year.
