A lycanthrope is a werewolf.  Lycanthropy describes the actual ability of the person to undergo this transformation; it is believed to come from the Classical figure of Lycaon, a king of Arcadia, who was turned into a wolf by Zeus.  As with vampires, most legends tell that it is when a human is bitten by a werewolf that they gain this power - or curse.
