A book of the Hebrew Bible, originally called the Proverbs of Solomon, though true authorship is disputed. Often referred to as “wisdom literature”, Proverbs is composed of sentences contrasting the actions and thoughts of the wise with those of the foolish. The latter is characterised as one who does not learn from his or her mistakes and disregards all forms of morality (morality as laid down by the Bible, that is).
