"Dalai Lama"

The current Dalai Lama is Tenzin Gyatzo (born Lhamo DÓ§ndrub in 1935). He is the 14th Dalai Lama, holding the position of spiritual leader of the peoples of Tibet since 1950, when he was aged 15. He is also head of the Tibetan government-in-exile.

The first Dalai Lama to visit the West, he has travelled the globe speaking on Buddhist teachings and promoting religious harmony and interfaith dialogue. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 and given honorary Canadian citizenship in 2006. He was also given the US Congressional Gold Medal in 2007.

He announced his semi-retirement in 2008.
