St Teresa of Ávila
(1515-1582) was canonized in 1622 by Pope Gregory XV
and made a Doctor of the Church in 1970 by Pope Paul VI. A Carmelite
nun and reformer of the Carmelite order, she is also seen as one of the founders of the Discalced Carmelites.
Her writings on Christian mysticism and meditation are considered to be seminal examples of Spanish Renaissance literature. Her works include The Interior Castle and The Way of Perfection.
