"St Francis"

St Francis of Assisi (born Giovanni Francesco di Bernardone 1181-1226) was a Catholic deacon, preacher and founder of the Franciscan order.

He is the patron saint of animals and the environment, and along with Catherine of Siena a patron saint of Italy.

He was canonized by Pope Gregory IX in 1228, following which the foundation stone was laid for the Basilica of St Francis in Assisi, where he is buried in a neo-classical-style crypt.
