"They shoot a Brazilian man on the tube thinking he’s a bomber."

A reference to Jean Charles de Menezes (1978-2005), an innocent Brazilian man shot dead by police at Stockwell Underground station in south-east London on suspicion of being one of the fugitives involved in the previous day’s failed bomb plot. The incident took place only three weeks after the 7/7 London bombings and the public’s nerves were still raw.

The following summer, a corporate criminal prosecution was brought against the Metropolitan Police, who were found guilty and fined in November 2007. In September 2008 an inquest was opened over de Menezes’ death. The jury returned an open verdict in December.
