In the Biblical Book of Genesis, Lot’s wife was turned into a pillar of salt.
Lot took his family to live on the well-watered plains near the corrupt cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. When God planned to destroy the five cities, including Sodom and Gomorrah, he sent angels to warn Lot who entreated his family to flee for their lives without a backward glance. His wife disobeyed the latter instruction and was turned into a pillar of salt.
A pillar of Mount Sodom on the Dead Sea is named “Lot’s Wife” for its location and resemblance to a cloaked woman. A remote volcanic crag in the Philippine Sea, 400 miles off the coast of Tokyo, also bears her name.
