Rural Georgia, USA

Georgia is a state in the Deep South of the USA. Prior to the Civil Rights Movement, Georgia was rife with racism toward African-Americans living there.

Though The Color Purple is a period novel, it never refers to actual events: there are no dates, little sense of the passage of time and very few mentions of characters’ ages. However, cultural references date it to the time period 1910-1940. The book is therefore set before the African-American Civil Rights Movement, when African-Americans were subjected to the oppressive Jim Crow Laws that enforced racial segregation in public places and facilities.
